Kalogon’s New Controller Adjusts and Monitors Your Wheelchair Cushion’s Air Pressure Via Smartphone

Just a year after launching what it called the “world’s first smart wheelchair cushion,” Florida-based mobility startup Kalogon is rolling out its new Air Management System, which will allow wheelchair users to manage, control and maintain the pressure of their existing air cushions.

“Not every wheelchair user may be ready to change up their existing cushion setup. Kalogon AMS is a continuation of our efforts toward making comfortable seating more accessible to all, whether or not you choose a Kalogon (Orbiter) Smart Cushion,” says co-founder and CEO Tim Balz.

Kalogon’s Orbiter cushion, introduced in February 2022, allows you to control its pressure via a simple app. Our reviewer was impressed by its comfort and functionality, and hailed it as an innovative addition to the cushion market. The new AMS offers users the same degree of control without the nerve-wracking and expensive ordeal of buying and moving to a new cushion.

“Kalogon AMS is designed to reduce anxiety around using typical air cushions,” says Balz. “Air cushions can lose pressure due to leaks or changes in altitude while traveling, and require the manual and inconsistent ‘two-finger test’ to fix. Kalogon AMS enables clinicians to set one or more clinician-recommended levels and to maintain those set pressures [on a client’s existing cushion] while adjusting to ambient conditions.”

The AMS is compatible with single-cell, high-profile cushions such as ROHO or Star. MSRP is $350. There is no Medicare code for the controller yet, but Kalogon says that customers have had success obtaining insurance reimbursement for their Orbiter cushion.
