Adaptive Jeans for Limited Dexterity: Testing MagnaReady’s Five Pocket Jeans with Magnetic Fly

The Five Pocket Jeans with Magnetic Fly are a recent addition to MagnaReady’s line of adaptive clothing utilizing magnets and Velcro to make dressing and managing clothing easier for those with impaired hand function. I previously reviewed a different model of MagnaReady’s pants and came away impressed, so I was happy to check out their new jeans.

The Five Pocket Jeans are made of soft denim and feature elastic inside of the waistband for added comfort and flexibility. They have a magnetic closure instead of a traditional zipper, and Velcro instead of the button that would normally be on the waistband.

The magnetic closure on the Five Pocket Jeans works very well for me as a C5-C6 quad with limited dexterity. All I had to do was get the bottom magnets close enough to connect and the rest snapped together quickly. To close the Velcro, I put my thumbs through the belt loops and pulled the sides together. The elastic in the waistband helps make the process easier. Undoing the magnets and Velcro was quite easy as well. To undo the Velcro, I put my thumb through the belt loop on the left and pulled it apart. Once the Velcro was undone, I could pop the magnets just by pushing them apart.

Franz found the Velcro and magnetic closures easy to use and appreciated how the reinforced loops made it easier for his caregiver to pull the pants up.

After struggling to close MagnaReady’s Fordham chino pants when I reviewed them in 2022, I took my own advice and ordered a size larger. The larger waist solved the issue, and I had no problems getting the magnets and Velcro to close. I am 6’3” and the 32” inseam Five Pocket Jeans fit perfectly.

The Five Pocket Jeans also come with reinforced loops attached to the waistband to make it easier to pull them up. My caregiver had an easier time using the loops, and I will be interested to see how they hold up under heavy use.

The Five Pocket Jeans with Magnetic Fly are a great option for those looking to improve their independence in dressing or those who want to make tasks like cathing easier. They are available for $74.99 in 30” and 32” inseams, with waist sizes from 30” to 44.”

It’s interesting that pants with a 32-in inseam fit a guy that is 6’3 ” tall. I’m the same height and I believe they would be much too short on me. They look good on you in the picture.
