It’s been 60 years since Sir Roger Bannister shocked the world by running a sub-four minute mile and he was on hand in late May for London’s Bupa Westminster Mile as Britain’s David Weir attempted to become the first wheelchair racer to come in under three minutes.

Weir, a six-time Paralympic gold medalist, dominated the event and in the process set a new world record for the mile, but he fell seven seconds short of the elusive three-minute mark.

The 34-year-old didn’t make history in the way he wanted to, but he was satisfied with his performance. “I gave it my best shot and I wasn’t too far off,” Weir told the British Broadcasting Corporation. “I knew I was in good shape because I’ve done tons and tons of speed work. But it was just a bit tough here on the turns. If it was a straight mile, I would have gone under easily.”
