The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association has announced that Courtney Boyll, a mother of three and third grade teacher at Moulton Elementary in Moulton, Ala., is one of four winners of its 2014 Local Hero Contest.
Boyll, 36, was given the keys to a new 2014 Toyota Sienna with a VMI Northstar conversion during a special ceremony held in August. She was selected from thousands of entries submitted from around the country.
It was an ecstatic moment when she won the contest but more important to Boyll is using her life as an example for all her students. “Kids seeing me everyday getting up and doing what I do, I feel like that’s a lesson in its self,” she says.
In 1994, when she was a sophomore in high school, Boyll crashed her car on a winding country road. The promising athlete wouldn’t walk again but after rehabilitation she went on to earn her teaching degree. Besides teaching, Boyll serves as assistant volleyball coach under her sister.
