Grand Canyon Accessibility Focus of New Book

Wheelchair users who are planning to visit the majestic panoramas of the Grand Canyon may be surprised to learn they can reach the bottom of the canyon by vehicle. This is one of the many surprises in a new book by accessible travel guru, Candy Harrington.

The book, Barrier-Free Travel: The Grand Canyon for Wheelers and Slow Walkers, details the accessibility of trails, sites, attractions and lodging throughout the canyon’s North and South Rim. Harrington wrote the book because she says, “Many folks think the Grand Canyon isn’t accessible — after all it is a canyon. But the great thing about the Grand Canyon is that you get the best views from the rims, and there are lots of accessible trails and vantage points in and near the park.”

The guide includes information about the rarely mentioned Grand Canyon West, which is located outside of the park on Hualapai tribal land. Readers will also find the specifics on accessible bus and helicopter tours in the park along with information on the historic Grand Canyon Railway.
