Due to United Spinal’s advocacy, in March Congress approved a $3.5 million funding increase for the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research 2022 budget. $2 million will go toward funding additional Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems, the nationally recognized centers of excellence that provide the highest level of comprehensive SCI services, from the point of injury through rehabilitation and re-entry into full community life. Currently there are 14 existing SCI Model Systems funded. There will also be a yet-to-be determined increase of funding going to all SCI Model Systems.
For over 50 years, the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems program, sponsored by NIDILRR, has been the backbone of a multidisciplinary system of care for people with spinal cord injuries. These Model Systems conduct a wide range of research and provide information to patients, professionals and the public both nationally and internationally.
Thanks to all United Spinal advocates representing the SCI/D community. People with disabilities, healthcare professionals and allies alike responded to our many action alerts and requests for Congressional meeting attendance. Together we made a difference.
United Spinal is asking Congress for increased federal funding for Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems for fiscal year 2023, combined with significant funding increases for both the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center and the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center as one of our policy priorities for Roll on Capitol Hill this year.
