fuelService App Helps Disabled Drivers Find Refueling Assistance

Getting gasoline as a wheelchair user is a pain. Many pumps aren’t accessible, and if you need assistance, finding it can feel like a game of roulette where “winning” means accessing a service that everyone else takes for granted. The fuelService mobile app aims to remedy this situation by making it easier for disabled drivers to request pumping assistance from gas stations.

If you can imagine a priority curbside-pickup service for refueling, then you understand the fuelService app. Here’s how it works: fuelService provides a list of nearby stations from their network of over 8,000 participating fuel stations in the U.S. You can use the app to choose a station and tap “ask for assistance.” Then fuelService contacts the station. After a few seconds, the app lets you know if the station’s employees are available to help in the next 30 minutes. If they aren’t, you can quickly try another station. Once you receive a confirmation, you can drive to the station with confidence. Upon arrival, you simply enter your pump number and notify the station through the app.

Gas stations in the U.S. are required by federal laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act to help drivers with disabilities pump gas if there is more than one employee. But few gas stations have useful systems in place to provide that assistance to disabled drivers. As a C7 quad, I use fuelService whenever I have to get gas here in Connecticut because it removes all the stress and uncertainty that I used to experience going from station to station or waiting long periods for help. Now when I arrive, there’s no more having to explain my disability or my rights to get assistance — employees simply spring into action to help. It feels effortless.

fuelService continues to expand its network of participating stations from BP, Citgo, ExxonMobil, Gulf, Marathon, Shell, Sunoco and others across the continental U.S.

If you want to give it a try, the app is free to download on the App Store and Google Play, or you can go to get.fuelService.org.

Yes, It’s great! I just started using it here in BC,Canada. Sure saves a lot of hassle phoning around hoping a station has someone available. They do it all for you, all you do is show up, text them the spot you’re in and they come gas you up! It’s fantastic…finally a hassle free way to gas up. Now if the APP could only drop the price a buck a litre, we’d be laughing!
