What to Watch at the Beijing Winter Paralympics

After a short six months, the Paralympics are back, with Beijing hosting the 2022 Winter Games. Following in the footsteps of NBC’s unprecedented coverage of the Tokyo Games, the network is again stepping up its Paralympic TV presence.

NBC is airing 120 hours of competition on TV, spread between NBC, USA and the Olympic Channel. Beijing time is 16 hours ahead of the West Coast and 13 hours ahead of the East Coast, so most competitions will air in the U.S. the evening before their listed date. All events and competition will also be shown on the Peacock streaming service, as well as NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. Full event replays will also be available.

If you can wake up early enough, the Games kick off with the opening ceremonies on Friday, March 4 at 3:30 a.m. PST on the USA Network. Here’s what to watch once the rest of the competition gets underway that evening.

  • When: Saturday, March 5 to Sunday, March 13 (Beijing time)
  • Where: Coverage starts March 4 at 6 p.m. PST on NBC (TV).
  • Why: Sit-ski racing has everything from the high-speed thrill of the downhill to the tight-turning technical mastery of the slalom. USA standouts include Andrew Kurka, the reigning Paralympic gold medalist in the downhill, and Laurie Stephens, who took gold in the giant slalom at this year’s world championships.

  • When: Saturday, March 5 to Sunday, March 13 (Beijing time)
  • Where: USA kicks off its competition against archrival Canada on March 4 at 9:05 p.m. PST on USA and NBC (TV).
  • Why: Sled hockey’s fast-paced action, skillful shot-making and sled control make it arguably the most exciting Winter Paralympic sport to watch. Team USA is looking for a history-making fourth consecutive gold medal.

  • When: March 5, 8 and 11 (Beijing time)
  • Where: Coverage starts March 4 at 6 p.m. PST on USA and NBC (TV).
  • Why: Skis and guns! Seriously, biathlon’s combination of cross-country sit-ski endurance combined with the zen precision of air rifle shooting makes it one of the most unique sports at the Paralympics.

  • When: Sunday, March 6 to Sunday, March 13 (Beijing time)
  • Where: Coverage starts March 5 at 6 p.m. PST on USA (TV) with the men’s 18km race.
  • Why: Cross-country athletes like Team USA standout Oksana Masters are some of the fittest on the planet. Watching racers gut through a sprint finish after 30-minutes of all-out effort makes for compelling TV.

  • When: Saturday, March 5 to Saturday, March 12 (Beijing time)
  • Where: Coverage starts on March 4 at 3:35 a.m. PST when USA and Great Britain square off on the Olympic Channel (TV).
  • Why: Paralympic curling athletes are on a whole different level, but it’s fun to dream — this looks like a sport you might actually be able to play. Canada and China are favorites, but USA has been on the rise the past few years and hopes to secure its first ever Paralympic medal in the sport.
