A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog about Medicare drastically cutting what it pays for wheelchair accessories beginning on Jan. 1, 2016. One of our readers asked specifically what Medicare plans to cut, so I am including a list of the items that will have major reimbursement cuts on already thin margins, and in various instances be eliminated from funding all together.
The following is from Jackie Klotz, marketing manager for ROHO – A Permobil Company:
“What medical equipment is affected? The following complex wheelchair system components would be harder to access or completely eliminated:
- Seat and back cushions that provide proper positioning and pressure release
- Power recline and tilt systems to change positioning for better breathing, blood flow and pressure ulcer prevention
- Specialty drive controls for individuals who must use alternative means to operate their complex wheelchairs
These are items included in Medicare E1399 and K0108 codes for miscellaneous DME and miscellaneous wheelchair components and accessories.”
This is really serious for any and all wheelchair users because private insurance tends to take its cue, good or bad from the example set by Medicare. Reading down the list it is clear that the cuts extend to almost every item beyond the bare frame of a wheelchair.
Advocates ask that as many people sign this petition asking the powers that be to look and reevaluate the Medicare rule. The petition needs 100,000 signatures by next Wednesday, Oct. 28, and right now there are only around 24,000 signatures — however this is up from 16,000 last week, so it isn’t over yet. …

Cut the “do nothing” Congressional salaries AND benefits, NOT MEDICARE and especially not for those least able to afford such necessitites.
I agree with Paula!!! Cut Congress’ salaries and the other cushy Gov’t. jobs and leave Medicare alone!!!
Their whole way of cutting these “accessories” is so ignorant of what it takes to live/use a wheelchair. Ya can’t take away the joystick on a powerchair and still use it. It’s not an “accessory”. The whole list is chock full of things that don’t belong listed as an accessory. So please, help stop this budget cut.
This is ridiculous. There are people in need of wheelchairs and accessories. Cut Congress salaries and leave Medicare alone
SHAME on medicare….this a a terrible thing to do to people.
